Cat Overgrooming - Why Cats Lick or Chew Their Fur

Why Is My Cat Overgrooming?

Overgrooming occurs when a cat licks or chews their fur excessively, sometimes causing hair loss or skin irritation.

Possible causes

  • skin allergies
  • parasites
  • pain or medical conditions
  • anxiety or stress
  • lack of stimulation

Medical causes should always be ruled out first.

Things that may help

Environmental adjustments can sometimes reduce stress-related grooming:

  • increasing play and enrichment
  • providing predictable routines
  • reducing environmental stressors
  • adding safe resting places

When behaviour support helps

If overgrooming continues after medical causes are ruled out, behaviour consultation can help identify contributing factors.
